We Will Provide Enabling Environment for You”…Kano Health Commissioner Assures TB Partners



Kano State Government has assured partners fighting tuberculosis in the state that they will be provided with enabling environment.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, made the assurance when he received the TB Partners that called on him in his office.

The Commissioner said that one of the cardinal principles of the administration of Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf is to revive the healthcare system of the state decayed over the years and to improve it to optimal level for effective service delivery, maintaining that actions of His Excellency has proven his determination and political will to deliver his promises unto the health sector.

Dr. Labaran elated to hear that Kano is the leading state in TB case finding in Nigeria, attributing the accomplishment to the concerted efforts of the TP Partners in interrupting the transmission of the contagious disease in the state.

In a statement signed by the information officer state Ministry for Health Ibrahim Abdullahi the Commissioner further eulogized them for detecting TB case and commencing treatment within two weeks, saying it is a cheering success otherwise an infected person that keeps moving around will spread the air borne disease to so many people, commending them for donating 28 gene machines to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital and Sheikh Muhammad Jidda General Hospital.

“We will make the environment enabling for you. There will be no problem with counter funds in need. Just write your request in good time for me to explain to His Excellency and it will be done. Our Governor doesn’t have problem with anything developmental to the good people of the state”, Dr. Labaran confidently asserted.

He suggested that partners should have their own forum where they will be sitting together to exchange notes and ideas in order avoid clash of programme implementation, that no partner will just embark on the same thing and at the same time, assuring that he will be meeting TB Partners bimonthly or quarterly so that the ministry and the partners know what both of them are doing.

“I want to divide Kano into at least six zones. Let there be established TB testing centre at each zonal general hospital. Identify people there and train them. If you have the equipments give them, if you don’t have let me know how much it will cost, I will buy and put them there. We want make Kano a TB free state in the country”, the Commissioner assured.

He also assured them of his readiness to participate in the up coming National TB Testing Week and commended them for establishing the state TB detection centre at Sheikh Muhammad Jidda General Hospital, stressing that he will officially receive the centre for the benefit of people of the state.

Earlier speaking, the Programme Manager Leprosy and TB of the State Ministry of Health leading TB Partners, Dr. Ibrahim Aliyu Gano, said that they were at the Commissioner’s office to felicitate with him for his appointment and to explain to him about the efforts TB Partners have being put in place in fighting TB in the state.

He informed the Commissioner that TB Partners are doing excellently in terms of demand creation services in the facilities, awareness creation and media engagements, adding that as a result of the various interventions of partners Kano state has recorded a lot of achievements in the fight against TB.

Dr. Gano stated that Kano is now the leading state in the country in terms of TB case finding so much that just recently Kano broke another record by been the only state in Nigeria that reached the mark of 8,000 plus TB cases finding.

The partners present during the visit include KNVC Nigeria, Breakthrough Action-Nigeria Project and TB Network and each of them made a brief presentation on their activities in containing TB in Kano state and sought for continued collaboration with the Commissioner which he obliged.
