As Christmas and New year celebrations draws near the prices of some food items in Ilorin the Kwara state capital have increased.
When Radio Nigeria correspondent went round some major markets such as Oja Oba,Mandate market,Oja Tutun,Ipata Market among others it was discovered that while the prices of grains have gone up , that of perishable goods has reduced.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria a trade Hafsatu Zakariyau attributed the increase in the price of some food items to high demand associated with festive seasons.
She said a Fifty Kilograms bag of rice that sold at forty five thousand naira last week is now fifty thousand naira.
Hafsatu said a Jerry Can of 25liters vegetable Oil that cost thirty four thousand naira is now thirty nine thousand naira.
She said the prices of other items such as packaged flour meal , seasonings, Beans , and Onions has reduced .
Hafsatu said the reduction in price of perishable items was due to the season , adding that most of the items grow well during this period.
In her comments a customer ,Mrs Abimbola Oluwaseun expressed optimism that despite all odds families would celebrate Christmas and New year in a modest way within their available resources.
She appealed to government and wealthy individuals to assist those in need to enable them enjoy the festive season.
