Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has promised to provide technical support required for to the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS to develop it infrasture and enhance trade activities within the sub region and beyond.
He stated this in Abuja during press briefing after a meeting with President of ECOWAS Commission Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, in Abuja as part of his state visit to Nigeria.
The German Chancellor explained that his country was also working with ECOWAS towards pandemic prevention, security and democratic stability in the region, adding that financial support have increased to the bloc recently to address development challenges.
He said recent military intervention in the sub region prompted Germany to work more closely with the Sub regional body to prevent further attempts.
The president of the ECOWAS Commission Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, who recognises Germany as an important and strategic partner to the ECOWAS, said already, the sub regional body had received €81 million Euros grant to production capacity, infrastructure development including electricity.
Dr. Touray added that there were plans to link electricity power production through West Africa from a centre in Cotonou in the Republic of Benin.
He said, the project would allow West African countries to get electricity from a cheaper source, adding that it would translate to cheaper electricity within the bloc.
The ECOWAS President said they discussed the challenges facing the region, including insecurity, infrastructure deficit and social development.
