Just-in: Kano State Goverment to immunize over 3M Children During July 2023 Polio campaign. Dr. Labaran



Kano State Government has re-iterated it’s status to maintain the Polio free status.

The State Commissioner for Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf stated this during a Press Briefing on July/August Fractional-Dose of Inactivated Polio Vaccine and Novel Oral Polio Vaccine Campaign in Kano.

He said the campaign is part of the national activities scheduled to take place simultaneously in some five states namely, Kano, Kaduna, Niger, Jigawa and Federal Captain Territory aimed at improving the immune status of the children to interrupt the transmission of the Mutant Polio Virus Type II in some parts of the country.

“It is good to note that, after three years without a single case of wild polio virus in Nigeria and Nine years in Kano State. Nigeria was certified Polio free on the 25th of August 2020. In an attempt to maintain the Polio free status, Kano state and indeed the country in line with the Polio end game strategy have intensified and strengthen active surveillance and routine immunization to vaccinate all eligible children in the state and the country in general”. The commissioner said

Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf further said, the federal government confirmed an outbreak of Mutant polio virus type II in 2018 In the country and by the January 2022, more than 390 cases were recorded from 28 states of the federation including Kano state.

The commissioner pointed out that, the campaign will be conducted in Two phases considering the number of Local government areas and the massive logistics required. Phase One is scheduled to take place between 22nd to 28th July 2023 in 20 local government areas while second phase will take place from 31st July to 7th August 2023 in the remaining 24 local government areas. Adding that, during the exercise 3,259,339 children under Five years of the age are expected to be immunized.

“It is estimated that, more than one Billion Naira (cost of the vaccines, pluses, personnel stipends, supervision, social mobilisation, waste management and other logistics) will be spent during the campaign,” he said.

The commissioner maintained that, the flag off of the campaign will take place on Sunday 22nd July 2023 at Gabasawa local government area by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He call on all parents and care givers to utilize this opportunity given to them by the government as these interventions are safe, effective and free.
