Kano Launches 1st HPV Free Vaccination Campaign Targeted Over 1.5 Girls

Kano state government has launched fee Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) mass vaccination camping across 44 Local government areas of the state.

The state commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf announced this during a flag-off of the exercise in Kano.

He said the five days free HPV mass vaccination camping exercise scheduled to take place from 11th to 16th November 2023 across the state was targeted 1,550,000 million girls aged between 9 to 14 years.

” A single daae of the vaccine is highly effective in preventing infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) types 16 and 18 that are known to cause at least 70 percent Cervical cancer in Nigeria, cervical cancer is the third most common cancer and the second most frequent cause of cancer deaths among women aged between 15 and 44 yeas. In 2020, available data showed that, the country recorded 12,000 new cases and 8000 deaths from cervical cancer.” Dr Labaran said

The commissioner further said, the mass vaccination camping is designed to take place in schools, and communities including place of warships using temporary fixed post. Adding that, it is hope the vaccine will later be incorporated into routine immunization schedules within health facilities which is free.

Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf also called on parents and other care givers to use the opportunity provided by the government to ensure that, children (girls aged 9 and 14 years) receive the vaccine to get protected from HPV infection that cause cervical cancer which leads to untimely death of women in this country.

“In order to disregard of any rumor about the vaccine. I personally bring my Biological daughter to first HPV vaccinated in the whole kano state as many people witnessed.” The commissioner added

The commissioner commended Kano state government for giving support and cooperation to the health sector.

Speaking earlier, the Representative of Executive Director National Primary Healthcare Development Agency Dr. Muyi Aina said the introduction of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine into the routine immunization schedule targeting girls between 9 and 14 years in Nigeria is a pivotal step toward preventing morbidity and mortality associated with cervical cancer.

Dr. Muyi Aina thanked Kano state government for its commitment and prioritizing health sector.

” We acknowledged and approval given by the Kano state government for the counterpart funds for other campings coming.” ES NPHCDA added

It may recall that, the Federal Government launched the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination camping on 24th October 2023. Since then states are now implementing according to the national schedule. Up to 7.7 million girls aged between 9 and 14 years are expected to be reached across the 36 states of the federation and FCT Abuja.
