KNSG Embarks on Demolitions of Illegal Structures Build On Waterways at Kwari Market

The Taskforce Committee set-up by the Kano state government to remove all the illegal structures built on drainages, has demolished a number of illegal shops at Kantin Kwari Market in Kano metropolis.

Speaking during the commencement of the demolition, the Chairman of the Committee, who doubles as the Commissioner Ministry of Environment, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, lamented the nonchalant and lackadaisical attitudes of some traders who are in the habit of erecting structures on and dumping waste indiscriminately into the drainages contribute immensely to the recent flooding in the market.

He said the demolition exercise is a directive given by the Executive Governor of Kano state Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

He said some of the drainage in Kano don’t have the capacity to take the large volume of water experience as a result of terrential rain due to climate change in Nigeria and beyond.

Dr Kabiru Getso said the committee has started demolishing all illegal containers, shop, generator houses, public conviences, and others structures raised on Kwarin-gogawau water ways adding that the Kano state Urban Planning and Development Authority KNUPDA been one of the member of the committee, have already started marking illegal structures and will continue marking and subsequent demolishing of them with a view to safeguard kwari market, Kano business community from been flood victims.

The chairman assured members of the public that all illegal structures raised will be pull down and all the drainages in the market will be desilted saying by diog so the issues of flooding will story in the past.

He then commiserate with Management of Kantin-Kwari Market, Kano Business community and Traders over the incident. “We will soon invite the management of the market and Traders for meeting”, “We will be embarking of massive sensitization of the public against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and garbage in water ways”.

He then appealed to the traders and the general public to join hands with the state government and relevant stakeholders to rescue the state from been submerged into flooding.

The commissioner added that the Kano state government will soon come of with a campaign tagged “Operation Clean Your Frontage” which focused on “if you are an owner of a structures be it a house, shops or any other structure, you will be responsible in cleaning it’s frontages and ensuring that all it’s drainages were completely desilted”.
