NEMA Advocates Compulsory Use of Life Jackets To Curb Boat Mishaps

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has urged the Niger State Government to enforce the use of life jackets in riverine communities to curb incessants boat mishaps in the State.

The Zonal Director, North Central of the Agency Mr. Bashir Idris Garga made the call when he led other executives on a visit to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago at the Government House Minna.

He observed that in addition to violation of operational guidelines, non of enforcement on the use of life jackets and overloading are significantly contributing to loss of lives in water transportation.

The NEMA Zonal Director North Central said Niger State has three major emergencies which are boat mishaps, flooding and Banditry.

He explained that to ensure adequate response to these and other emergencies the North Central office has been upgraded to a Directorate while plans are also on to unbundle the agency to be free from bureaucracy.

Responding, the Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago said plan is on to set up a Standing Committee on Inland Waterway within the State to ensure adherence to water transport regulations.

The Governor explained that the proposed Standing Committee would collaborate with an existing department in charge of boat mishaps under the Ministry of Transportation for effective regulations of waterways transportation.

He said through adequate collaboration with NEMA, HYPPADEC and the state government many residents in flood prone areas have been relocated to safer grounds.
