NLA Sensitizes Stakeholders On Importance Of Library To Community Development

The Nigerian Library Association has urged communities to have libraries for literacy development to improve their skills.

Prof. Manir Abdullahi-Kamba, chairman Nigeria Library Association Kano chapter, made the call during a regional conference organized by Association in Kano.

He said the main issue of organising this conference is to improve reading culture.

He said reading culture is seriously derailing, passion for reading is no longer there as before.

“We want to let people know importance of library reading .

“Now some students find it hard to go to library to read, most of these library that still function well is far.

“There is an app we want to introduce to let communities, students to know and use at their convinence”, he said.

He further explained that this application will be like an alarm on their phone to alert them to know what to read next.

On his part, Malam Abdallah Uba-Adamu from Information and media studies said people have neglected library, they only go during examination.

“Community library can be set up in a church or mosque to be a hub where members can be task to bring a book to the library and study and read about life”,he said.

In the same vein, the Governor of Kano, Engr. Abba Kabir-Yusuf said government is willing to provide conducive learning atmosphere in all schools in the State.

The Governor represented by Hajia Garba Halilu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor said arrangements are on top gear to provide more books in the libraries.

He commend association for organising such conferences and promises to collaborate for more activities.

The conference, themed” libraries engaging communities for literacy development”attracted participants from all states of North West Geo-Political zone.
