UPDATE: 2 died, 8 rescued in Kano building collapse

Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kano branch has confirmed that one person died at hospital from the Nine Victims rescued alive, after a three storey building collapsed at Beruit GSM Market on Tuesday.

Alhaji Musa D Abdullahi, Secretary of the Kano Branch, Nigerian Red Cross Society made the confirmation to our reporter, Wednesday.

He however said unfortunately a Staff of Kano Electricity Distribution Company, (KEDCO) also died during the rescue operation.

He explained that the KEDCO staff died, when he was trying to disconnect the building from the high tension but unfortunately, the power that was already shut down from the transformer, technically relayed back and trapped him which led to his death on the spot.

Similarly, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that one person died from the Eight rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

In a statement issued by Manzo Ezekiel, Head, NEMA Press Unit Abuja, said so far, as at 9:10pm Tuesday night, eight (8) persons have been rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

“Sadly, one of them was confirmed death by doctors at the hospital, six with minor injuries were treated and discharged.”

Manzo explained that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was alerted of the incident and immediately mobilised emergency responders to the site for rescue operations.

He further said NEMA Search and Rescue team from the Agency’s Kano Territorial Office were also deployed to reinforce and coordinate the rescue.

Also in a statement obtained by Pyramid FM, Kano, the Kano Fire Service Public Relations Officer Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi explained that the Agency recieved rescue call about the tragedy from one Aminu Sani on Tuesday at about 15:31hrs.

“The State Fire Service, Kano Central control room received an emergency call at about 15:31hrs from Aminu Sani. He reported a building collapse at Buirut road,”

“When our men reached the area at about 15:35 hrs, found that, a building of 2 floors of about 150 X 50 ft, which was under construction collapsed”

Acccording to him Eight Victims include Naziru Abdulkadir, 24 years old, Magaji Abubakar, 27 years old, Abdurauf Muhd, 38 years old and Minjibir Ibrahim, 46 years old.

Others are Ahmad Buhari Haruna 16 years old, Sadiq Haruna,19 years old, Abdurashid Basiru, 36 years old and Danladi Lawan, 29 years old.

The statement maintained that all victims where successfully rescued alive with various types of injured and no live lost at the scene of incident.

Our reporter gathered that the operations carried out jointly by search and rescue teams of NEMA, Kano State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, Nigerian Police, the Military, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, State Road Transport Authority (KAROTA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, and others.

Our reporter similarly gathered that the collapsed building was under reconstruction as additional floors were being added to the existing structure.
