In it’s efforts tackle environmental challenges especially Erosion, desertification and global warming, the Kano state government says it will plant four Millions Trees in Three Years.
The state commissioner for environment Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, made the disclosure while launching 2022 Tree planting camping Phase one, held Dakata area of Nasarawa local government in Kano state.
He said that in 2020 when the excercise was restored, about two million seedlings were planted and in 2021 about one million was planted respectively.
In 2022 he said, the state government will Plant another one million with an aim of improving vegetation cover and beautifying the environment.
According to the Commissioner, “The Ganduje administration restored tree planting campaign since inception.
“The annual exercise went into limbo, but his excellency the executive governor of Kano state Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR Khadimul Islam, revived the excercise.”
He explained that in 2020, Kano state government through the ministry of environment had planted two millions seedlings, last year 2021 we planted one million seedlings by making it in two phases.
Phase one was launched by his excellency Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje at Yusuf Maitama Sule city campus, while the second phase was launched by my humble self at Gama Community in Nasarawa Local government”.
According to Getso the program is maint for tackling environment challenges in the state ranging from climate change, Desertification, desert enchorachment, flooding, Erosion and improving vegetation cover.
He added that climate change, has become one of the topical issues at the global scale, that is why Kano state government is not lagging behind in addressing the chelleage.
He said in Dakata community only, the ministry will Plant over four hundred seedlings while other communities, schools, churches, Mosques, street and organisation will benefit from the gesture.
“Recently we have been experiencing very high temperature here in Kano which is quite unusual, so this is as a result of climate change.”
“One of the easy ways to address climate change, is by planting trees and improve vegetation cover which will subsequently control microclimate”. The Commissioner said.
Dr Kabiru Getso said this year, the state government will work closely with community leaders and organisations in planting the million seedlings, in order to increase production of oxygen to people from plant which by extension reduce air pollution in the State.
He said, the ministry will be distributing trees to graveyards, Mosque, schools and various organizations with a view of reducing extreme heat during dry season in the state.
The commissioner called on the general public to desist from indiscriminate failing of trees and avoid dumping of refuse in water ways, saying that the act will block drainages and cause flooding, which may lead to the loss of lives and properties of Kano populace.
In a remarks, the ward head of Dakata community in Nasarawa local government, Alhaji Umar Faruk comended the state government’s committement, pledging that the community under his watch will sustain the effort.
He then urged well to do individuals, communities to support the government, saying that God will reward them abonduntly.
