The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) is to launch Climate Landscape Analysis for Children (CLAC) in Nigeria aimed at highlighting key climate risks to children and provides an overview of the multi-sectoral climate mitigation and adaptation actions which will be implemented in the country from 2023 to 2027.

The launch will take place on Monday, the 20th of November 2023 in Abuja as part of the activities to commemorate the 2023 World Children’s Day.

Bauchi Field Office of UNICEF will stream the launch live in Gombe state, after the launch an inter-school quiz competition on climate change will be conducted by the Field Office and partners in Gombe.

A statement by UNICEF Nigeria observes that Children who account for 51 per cent of the 223 million people in Nigeria are disproportionately affected by climate change.

It indicates children are also often the first and most severely impacted by climate shocks due to their dependence on others, due to their non-self-sufficient nature and inability to make their own decisions.

Children are more susceptible to disease and malnutrition which at the long run affects their physiology.

The life stage requirements of children according to the statement are the need to be in school during the day, study at home at night and eat nutritious food.

“When the combination of drought, flooding, desertification, poverty and sociocultural factors are added in – which are all increasing and often lead to migration, conflict and displacement – children’s safety and access to water, health, education, food security and well-being are severely impeded” it states.

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is being celebrated annually on 20 November, to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

The 2023 theme of World Children’s Day is “For Every Child, Every Right.
